Experimenting with luminosity masks

I shot this image on a secluded Creek near Kingston New Brunswick in 2013. The real problem was the extremely wide dynamic range. Unfortunately I did not bracket the shot and I had a finger in the right lower corner. I have tried 30 iterations of this image but could never get it the way I saw it when I took it.

Recently I have been using luminosity masks much more frequently so I decided to make one more stab at this image.

In LR I increased exposure as much as possible, reduced the shadows as much as possible and shifted the blacks the right until I got to the place that there were no under or over exposed areas.

However when I got to Photoshop CC the image was very flat so I decided to use various luminosity masks to process the image. Even when looking at the darker areas of the image I don't see much noise. I'm Really very satisfied with the final result.

The treasures of impending ice.

It was a cold windy day on the lake without any contrasting light. With a bit of searching there are interesting images to capture. The leaves embedded in the ice reminded me of an autochrome image. The ice bubbles remind me of the barium contrast of the human colon.

Jðkusárlón Iceberg Lagoon

Small to medium icebergs calve from theVatnajökull glacier, the largest in Europe. Drawn by the tide the icebergs gradually make their way to the ocean where they are pummeled and eroded until they float onto the black sandy beaches near Vik. This is considered to be one of the best photographic places in the world.

Sea Stacks at Reynisfjara Beach, Southern Iceland
Spent a gorgeous morning trying to catch just the right water flow around the rocks.

Kirkjufell Mountain Creek on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula September 23,2015
Having endured more than 24 hours of rain we were chomping at the bit to get out and shoot. We were rewarded with this lovely scene.

NorthWestern Iceland
I had an opportunity to visit Iceland  in September 2015 and will post some images over the next while

Charleston Wall

Judy & I walked historic old Charleston for 2 days gathering many images. I love the rich patina and colouring of this more than 200 year old fence which was typical prior to 1820. Oh, the tales it could tell.

Charleston Window

Another example of the unique architecture.

Storm Clouds

It was a wet, stormy day - a great day to get some good brooding images. Yes, there is a hint of good weather on the horizon. With the rain the saturation boost was significant as in the view right behind us.

Killarney Lighthouse

We visited this old lighthouse last October. It was raining and the lichens on the rocks were so treacherous underfoot that we only got a few shots each. This is one of those places that we should have been wearing hockey helmets. I liked the soft muted sky and the vibrant colours in the lichens.

Bee & Rhododendron

Bee & Rhododendron

We have had a rhododendron which has no business thriving in our cold climate but is now more than 30 years old. I was doing some hand held macro in order to submit a closeup to a photo contest held annually by my alma mater. I feel that this image combines macro with mildly abstract art. I think I will submit this one

Here is an image of our old faithful Rhododendron

Bird on a Horn(with apologies to Leonard Cohen)

I was fascinated by this eclectic window in a hamlet just north of Barrie Ontario. I felt it would be best presented in B&W. Initial processing was done in Lightroom followed by PS CC and then onOne.

Barn Wall Art

This colourful image is located right across the street from the image above. Both are unique in their own way.

Mink Falls

Last September our group had a wonderful time touring  The North Shore of Lake Superior. These two images were taken at Mink Falls

Antique Tulips

We wandered around Government Dock recently. The Heritage Gardeners had been hard at work. I have been experimenting with Autochrome techniques and felt that these tulips suited this technique.

Old Barn north of Huntsville
I have wanted to stop and photograph this old barn situated north of Huntsville on Highway 11 for some time. I added a texture obtained from an images of an old rusty 45 gallon drum processed in Photoshop. I like the effect.

Round Door

We had a full day in Macau at the recommendation of Ed Eng and are we ever glad we heeded his advice. It is hard to believe that this beautiful old place had ever fallen into a dreadful state of disrepair. For comparison the next image was taken just across the street. What a contrast!

Cape Breton Sunrise
Taken at Neal's Harbour, Cape Breton Island. Focal length was just 16mm on a full frame camera. Creeping down over the wet, round, slippery boulders to get a closeup was treacherous.
Zion National Park
We visited this wonderful park in early April. The trees were just starting to leaf. The young swimmers added a human touch

Bryce Canyon Utah had just opened for the season in April

Springtime
Taken on a lovely spring evening. I really like the soft lighting. The ice had only been out for 2-3 weeks. No leaves on the trees yet. I bet these kids were really shivering.

Country Store

This is an image of the side of the old Commanda Country Store which now serves as a museum. I like the dilapidated look  and the virgin snowbank suggesting that no one has entered here.

Tuesday 3 March 2015

Cranberry Bog

I toned down the colours to try to express the desolate feeling on this cold, blustery mid November  day.

Winter Creek

I like the simplicity of the tree and the river snaking through the scene. Taken near Bondfield on a sunny day.

Tuesday 24 February 2015

Caribbean Sunrise

When I was working Judy and I would get away annually to The Sand Castle on Jost Van Dyke Island for a week wearing only a t-shirt, hat and a bathing suit. Each morning I would walk barefoot on the beach and enjoy the ocean rushing around my feet.

Northern Lake

There has been sickness in the family which has taken all of my attention for the last three months. Treatment is almost finished, so hopefully I can start posting some images once again.

I took this image on a beautiful September evening at a good friends cottage in Northern Ontario not too far from Wawa. I gave this image to my friend and his wife for Christmas. Unfortunately he passed away suddenly about 2 weeks later. This image is significant to his widow as it is the exact place that his ashes will be spread this coming spring.
